A Training-cum Potato Tuber Seed Distribution Programme was successfully conducted on 9th December 2025 at KVK, Kohima Campus to support FPOs, Farmers Club, farm women and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from Tseminyu and Kohima districts. A total of 5,000 kilograms of certified Potato Tuber Seeds (variety: Kufri Jyoti) were distributed during the programme.
The event, organized by KVK Kohima, Nagaland under ATARI Zone-VII and sponsored by the ICAR–Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), NEH Programme, New Delhi, marked a significant step toward empowering local farming communities with improved seeds and scientific farming knowledge.
Dr. Ruokuovilie Mezhatsu, Principal Scientist & Head, KVK Kohima, led the programme along with his team. He emphasized the importance of adopting scientific cultivation methods and innovative farming practices to cope with the challenges posed by changing weather patterns.
The programme saw active participation from several key experts:
• Dr. Shisarenla Aier, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture) & Nodal Officer, NEH Programme, highlighted the significance of potato as a major crop and staple food. She underscored that introducing improved potato varieties can substantially enhance yield, reduce crop failure risks, and improve the economic conditions and living standards of rural households.
• Dr. Martina Shitri, ACTO (Plant Breeding & Genetics), provided hands-on training to beneficiaries on potato cultivation practices—ranging from seed treatment, sowing, crop management at critical stages, harvesting, and proper seed preservation for the next season.
Participants also engaged in interactive sessions where they discussed local challenges directly with the scientists. Topics such as soil health management, pest and disease control, and selection of high-quality seeds were thoroughly covered, enabling practical, location-specific solutions.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Ruokuovilie Mezhatsu reiterated KVK Kohima’s unwavering commitment to agricultural development in the region and its continued support to farmers and rural organizations.
Altogether a total of 46 participants representing FPOs, Farmers Club, women’s groups, and SHGs from Tseminyu and Kohima districts along with KVK officials attended the programme.
